Adesina ADETOLA :A Chip off the old block- Femi Alufa

Adesina Adetola is a true son of his father and resembles him, his character and mien as a genuine gentleman ,a lover of education who devoted his life for the service of humanity.

Chief J.B.C.Adetola(1924-1999),teacher,educationist and community developer was a native of Ikoro-Ekiti in Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He was one of the pioneer teachers of the Doherty Memorial Grammar School, Ijero-Ekiti,the first community secondary school in Ekiti State founded on February 7,1955.Chief JBC Adetola also taught a number of students at Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti.He had both Bachelor degrees in Economics in Economics and Geography.Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of London (1960) and Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography,Fourah Bay College (later University of Sierra Leone) in 1965.He taught in many schools in Ekitiland and other States before he retired as a school Principal.

It is also interesting to know that Chief JBC Adetola was a co-operator who invested so much of his finances in the economic and social development of his community even in his retirement.

A prolific author and writer of national repute, his book he wore on Human and Regional Geography was  one of the Best Sellers in the 1980s to the early 1990s in the subject when there is standard in the quality of education in Nigeria. There are number of authors that you will forget the title of their books but you will forever not forget their names as it is indelible in ones heart as a student. For example,SMO Aka book on English language Grammar and Essays was a masterpiece,Ossei Yaw Abbabio (Ghanaian author) book on Chemistry was one of the Science Students Bible during my secondary School days .P.N.Okeke’s textbook for Physics was a successor of Nelkon’s Physics textbook and Lambert’s Chemistry textbook.B.O.Adeleke and Goh Cheng Leong authored a best selling book on Physical and Human Geography and JBC Adetola’s book on Human Geography was a student’s delight.

I made Distinction(A1) in Geography during my Senior Secondary School Days and have to privilege to score 100 per cent once in Geography in a Polytechnic and College of Education (PCE) tertiary examination conducted by Joint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB) through my acquaintances with great teachers and authors like Chief JBC Adetola.I remembered that my Geography Teacher at Doherty Memorial Grammar School, Ijero-Ekiti,Mr.Bayo Ayeni invited Chief JBC Adetola to teach us Geography during our preparation for Geography as a veteran teacher, erudite scholar and prolific author.

Without mincing words,Chief JBC Adetola devoted his life to the service of humanity.I usually see him drove in his 505 Peugeot Saloon Car as he belonged to the high class of Ijero District Society in the moulds of Chief J.A.Arokodare,Chief G.A.Adejuwon,Mr.Dare of Epe-Ekiti,all of them are now of blessed and illustrious memory. These are the intelligentsia and role models who belongs to the upper class of the Ijero Society in the 1990s.

It was in 1990 barely 30 years ago that I first came in contact with Adesina Adetola (son of the erudite Chief JBC Adetola of Ikoro-Ekiti)as student of Babatope Memorial High School, Ikoro-Ekiti.He came to represent his school at an Inter-Collegiate Quiz Competition at Doherty Memorial Grammar School, Ijero-Ekiti.Since then we have become cerebral kindred spirits. In 2003,After his graduation from Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA),he came visiting to my house at Ipakan Estate,Ijede-Ikorodu via Lagos Thermal Station,Egbin along with the late Comrade Ibukun Oluwole (Olembe)and we exchanged pleasantries and gave them a number of books from my private library that started with a modest 200 books in December 1999.

In March 2009,I started the publication of Ekiti Summit Newspaper under the editorship of Mr.Femi Oladunjoye,I was then an ICT Administrator and Broadcast Engineer with Radio Lagos/EKO FM and a postgraduate student at the Lagos State University (School of Communications),Surulere,Lagos. Then ,Adesina Adetola and his brother Deji Adeluyi to do the re-branding of the new EKITI SUMMIT Media, we travelled from Lagos to Ekiti where Late Mrs Eunice Fajuyi (Widow of Lt.Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, the first military Governor of Western Region of Nigeria)granted our first Interview at her Okesha residence, Ado-Ekiti. We also met with the Late Fajuyi family including his siblings and first son, Mr.Donald Olufemi Fajuyi and other personalities in Ado-Ekiti during the Interview.

Mr Adesina Adetola was later named the Managing Editor of Ekiti Summit Newspaper. We have been working and collaborating together in many development projects for the common good of our Ekiti people. Together,we are building a greater future of Ekiti Communities for the sake of our progenies.

Thank you Shina for being a chip off the old block like your father, a consistent Ekiti Patriot, progressive and cerebral mind who live his life as a beatitude to his fellow human being.

Wishing you a blissful birthday and many happy returns of the day. May your strength be renewed like an eagle in your new Odyssey of life.Happy birthday to a jolly good fellow. Igba Odun , Odun kan ni ooo.Amin.
