The Ayetoro-Ewu road in Ekiti State, southwest of Nigeria is now known as the bandit zone as victims and eyewitnesses relay their experiences to our reporter on Sunday, September 12.
“We were driving when we saw a gunman holding an automatic rifle …AK47 and shot at an oncoming cream colour Toyota Venza and he later faced us and shot in the air then we started reversing,” a victim who refuses to disclose the identity said.
One of the witnesses said the unknown gunman later disappeared into the bushes after he shot in the air.
Efforts to speak to senior security personnel at the Police Station off Ayetoro-Usi road proved abortive but an officer who reluctantly spoke to our reporter gave her a verbal warning, “If you like yourself please don’t pass that road or you are on your own.”
Reports have it that they strike often during the weekends and in the event of the bandit kidnapping commuters along that route it takes the police till Monday to act on the cases of kidnap brought to them and by then most victims end up dead.
It can be recalled Police in Ekiti State on Saturday, August 7, confirmed a gun attack on travellers on the night of Friday, August 6 and according to the Police spokesman, ASP Sunday Abutu, the gunmen shot the driver of the vehicle, a LEXUS 330 SUV, dead.
