The Local Government elections in the 16 Council Areas of Ekiti State and 19 new Local Council Development Area (LCDAs) are now to hold on Saturday, December 4.

The Chairman of the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC), Justice Jide Aladejana, made this known through a notice of election released on Friday, September 3rd,2021 in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

It will be recalled on Tuesday, August 31, that the Bill sponsored by the Ekiti State House of Assembly Member representing Ekiti West Constituency II, Honourable Johnson Oyekola Bode-Adeoye (JOBA) which principally sought among other things, to provide the necessary legal framework for the smooth operation of the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission in tandem with current developments in the Local Government Areas and the newly created Local Council Development Areas Administration in Ekiti State and to legally empower the State Independent Electoral Commission(SIEC) to conduct elections into all elective offices of the 16 Local Government Areas and the 19 Local Council Development Areas passed into Law by the Ekiti State House of Assembly sitting in Ado Ekiti has been assented to by Dr John Kayode Fayemi CON, the Executive Governor of Ekiti State.

The duties of the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) is to organize, undertake and supervise all elections into the Local Government Councils in Ekiti State. In further pursuance of this, it is to render such advice as it may consider necessary to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC – a co-electoral management body in the State) on the completion of the register of voters in so far as that register is applicable to Local Government elections in Ekiti State.

The mission of the SIEC is, “To exercise the power conferred on it by Section 9a(i)(c) of Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (Amendment Law 2011) and other laws enabling it in that behalf, to conduct, to conduct free and fair elections into elective posts in all the Local Government Councils in Ekiti State, in a transparent and efficient manner.”
