The Lagos traffic worsened due to the average Lagos Road user’s disobedience of traffic rules. Driving in Lagos requires a lot of patience. Many times, traffic congestion has been caused by a road user not giving way to another road user.
Despite the establishment of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) which is a Lagos State-owned agency under the Ministry of Transportation established on Saturday, July 15, 2000, to transform the state transportation system to ensure free flow of traffic in the state and also reduce road accidents under Bola Ahmed Tinubu era; the traffic situation in the state immensely only during the Babatunde Raji Fashola era and after that it deteriorated to the present administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The results show that poor driving habits, poor road network, inadequate road capacity, and lack of parking facilities constitute the greatest causes of traffic congestion in Nigeria. Also, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja were identified as the cities most affected by traffic congestion.
