Ijero Municipal LCDA Protest Under Heavy Rain

The heavy downpour could not stop the protesters on Monday, August 16, from the Ijero-Ekiti metropolis who are agitating for the creation of the Ijero Municipal Local Council Development Area within the old Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti state, southwest Nigeria.

It will be recalled on Wednesday, August 4, the bill was passed for the creation of 19 Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) in the state and passed all the expected readings and was unanimously passed into law at the plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt Honourable Funminiyi Afuye. The approval followed the passage of a bill for a law to provide for the creation of new Local Government Areas in Ekiti State and other Related Matters (2021).

The 19 LCDAs were carved out of the formerly existing 16 LGAs in the state.

What sparked off the agitation was the state government created two new LCDAs from the existing Ijero Local Government which are Irewolede LCDA with the headquarters at Iloro-Ekiti and Irede LCDA with the headquarters at Ipoti-Ekiti hereafter the people of Ikoro-Ekiti were given an administrative centre under the Ijero Local Government.

Speaking with one of the conveners of the Ijero Municipal Agenda (IMA), Honourable Ayo Awe expressed the repugnance of the inability of the state government to give Ijero-Ekiti township with four wards an LCDA status.

Ijero Local Government Area created in 1976 is one of the 17 local government areas of the old Ondo State, southwest Nigeria and 8 of the LGAs inherited by Ekiti state in 1996 when the state was created, other LGAs have to be delineated at one time or the other making the former 16 LGA status of Ekiti state.

The people of Ijero LGA claimed they have suffered decades of political marginalisation in the Ekiti geopolitical configuration. They are appealing to the Dr Kayode Fayemi administration to correct what Honourable Awe calls the “political anomaly experienced by the good people of Ijero”.

Another convener of the group IMA, Mr Femi Alufa said, “What we want in Ijero-Ekiti metropolis is an autonomous LCDA styled as Ijero Municipal LCDA and not marginalisation of the people.”

Other Ijero Municipal stakeholders like Ijero Development Association (IDA) led by Engr. Niyi Owoyomi and Otunba Niyi Babade, Concerned Youths of Ijero-Ekiti led by Mr Biyi Oladosu, Federation of Ijero Student’s Union (FISU), members of Ijero Road Transport Union and the Market Women Association were part of the protest.
