He is crowned the 21st Olu of Warri on Saturday, August 21st,2021.
According to Dr Ayodeji Ekundayo,a medical practitioner of Ekiti origin in a WhatsApp platform,he wrote:” The Throne of Olu of Warri is only next to the Throne of the Oba of Benin in the Old Midwest region of Nigeria. It is very old and great beginning from the reing of Olu Ginuwa in 1480, up to this moment,a period covering 541 years, there was a period of Interregnum which lasted for 88 years between 1848-1936.The new Olu of Warri whose father was the Atunwase II,His Original names was Prince Godwin Toritseju Emiko, a Lawyer, he became the Olu in 1987 and his coronation on May 2nd 1987 was the Last Public event Papa Obafemi Awolowo Attended before Papa passed Away.in the South South zone, the Itskiris and the Edos are the components of the Yoruba race.
The Itshekiri tribe are purely Yoruba people, just like you have Ikale, Akoko,Owo,Owe,Bunu,Oworo,Yagba,Ijebu,Egba,Yewa,Egun etc,you also have Itsekiri. They are 100 percent Yoruba.”Dr.Ekundayo said.
He said further, “In Yorubaland we need to build our capacity by connecting with our brothers outside the SouthWest Geopolitical zone of Nigeria. In 2015,The then Prince Tsola Emiko now Ogiamen Atunwatse III was disqualified from becoming the Olu.
There is an edict that disqualifies anybody whose mother is neither Itsekiri nor of Edo origin. After the transition of Ogiamen Ikenwoli,he was presented by the Ginuwa ruling house headed by the Olori-Ebi to the Ojoyes and there was a crisis.it was however argued that, whatever rule or edit that qualifies an Itsekiri must automatically qualify a Yoruba bec ause the Two are same and 1.On the strength of that, it was passed that the Mother being a Yoruba Woman is aslo an Itsekiri woman by way of Historical affinity
Dr Ekundayo corroborated on the Significance of the Olu of Warri’s Installation with the corronation of the British Monarch.
“The order of succession is very peculiar,There are no Ruling houses, but a Royal Family.and The order is King to the First Son,next to the First Son the First son etc.at all times, everybody knows the order of succession even now.The Situation about the Benin and Itsekiri is almost similar to the British order except that in the Itsekiri instance, the IFA yes IFA is the Final authority. whoever the IFA approves stands approved and whosoever the Ifa disqualifies, remains so.
The corronation of a British Monarch is an ordination service.it takes place right inside the Cathedral and it is also a communion service where The body of Christ and his blood will be served.
When the Queen or the King is presented his or her sword as an instrument of authority, he or she will with her both hands walk alone to the and return the sword in a symbolic way of handing over her authority to God,
The attire worn today by the Olu has a cope, worn by Anglican Priests and similar to the type worn by Queen Elizabeth upon her corronation in 1953.Olu Atunwatse III also pronounced and Handed over her reign to God who is the King of all Kings. Todays corronation is Unique. The Kingdom and Sovereignty of God shall be forever. Amen
The newly corronated Olu of Warri told the Youth in the Niger Delta to look beyond Oil.The wealth that came with oil has killed all forms of initiatives and desire to make efforts to be productive not only in the Niger Delta but in Nigeria as a whole. His address was very apt particularly at this time.
He spoke with so much finnese and confidence, little wonder that he took the title of ATUWATSE III.His Father was ATUWATSE II.a Technocrat of repute,he was the 19th Olu of Warri.
Who was the ATUWATSE I.
His name was Olu.Dom Domingos. The 7th Olu of Warri, he succeeded his Father who was the 6th Olu of Warri, his name was Sebastiao ATORONGBOYE. The 6th Olu of Warri.
Olu Domingos ATUWATSE I, was educated in Portugal around 1600.he was a University Graduate around 1610 becoming the First person in the Sub Sahara Africa to become a University Graduate. This was about 250 years before University education became popular in the country.
He was married also to a white woman he also met in Portugal. It was the slave trade that ravaged the advantages this early exposure to Western Education could have offered us. He was also a Catholic, so was his own Father, as at 1600,the Catholic Church through the Portuguese had made inroad here before it was halted.
The Missionaries did not come back until 1843.
It is not too late for us to catch up with the rest of the world if we can build our capacity, our historical antecedent notwithstanding.
